Immortal Souls by Edward Feser

Thorough exposition of philosophical anthropology along the lines of St. Thomas Aquinas. Excellent.

Mania by Lionel Shriver

Shriver's latest novel. This one is an "alternative history" of the last 10 years, where a Mental Parity mania takes over the country that denies that there are any intelligence differences between people. Naturally bad things result. Not her best novel.

Return of the strong Gods by R.R. Reno

Excellent analysis of the cultural, political and religious situation of the West since WW2. The strong gods are things like God, family and nation.

Marathon Man by William Goldman

One of my favorite movies and a good book as well.

Storm Watch by C.J. Box

Another entry in the Joe Pickett series. The stories have gotten somewhat formulaic, but it's a pretty good formula. Box also weaves timely topics into his stories, in this case Game Warden Pickett gets involved with Bitcoin miners. Go figure.

Bad Therapy by Abigail Shrier

Excellent analysis of the manner in which psychological treatment has spread across the culture with not always good results, especially for children. Shrier's theme is "iatrogenesis", which basically means that the cure is worse than the disease.

Fatherless America by David Blankenhorn

Re-read of a classic. Written in the 1990s, prophetic of the social dysfunction we are experiencing today.

The Gray Ghost Murders by Keith McCafferty

I know I read this years ago but it's not on this blog. I've read all the Sean Stranahan stories, and they are all good.

The Night Fire by Michael Connelly

The first "Bosch and Ballard" novel from Connelly, where a retired Harry Bosch teams up with Detective Renee Ballard to solve cold cases on the side. It's another pretty good book (Connelly rarely writes a truly bad book) although I found the ending a little pat.

Dark Sacred Night by Michael Connelly

Connelly is incredibly prolific. This book has two of his recurring characters, Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard, teaming up to solve a cold case. It's pretty good, and I'll continue reading more in the Bosch-Ballard pairing.

Resurrection Walk by Michael Connelly

A Lincoln Lawyer novel featuring Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch. A solid court procedural.

Shadows Reel by CJ Box

#22 in the Joe Pickett series. The series is not as compelling as it once was, but still eminently readable. They've become more generic action stories than stories revolving around the details of Joe's Game Warden job in Wyoming. This story fits that description but is still good. Box knows how to tell a good story.

The Secret of the Old Mill by Franklin W. Dixon

#3 in the Hardy Boys series.  This one was pretty good, with the Hardys on the track of a band of counterfeiters.

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

Written in 1930, it later became a film noir classic starring Humphrey Bogart.  The movie follows the book very closely, including the dialog, so if you've seen the movie, you've essentially listened to the book as an audiobook.
