The series is not as compelling as it once was, but still eminently readable. They've become more generic action stories than stories revolving around the details of Joe's Game Warden job in Wyoming. This story fits that description but is still good. Box knows how to tell a good story.
David T.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12465166826152433002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491492892937231972.post-81230996758512260282024-03-09T10:00:00.000-08:002024-03-09T10:00:23.515-08:00The Secret of the Old Mill by Franklin W. His story is included as part of the HBO Band of Brothers series The Pacific.

This book is Leckie's account of the Guadalcanal campaign. It's an excellent, engaging read, mixing description of the high level strategy with in-the-foxhole details. There are a lot of personal details about the individuals involved, and Leckie's own experiences on Guadalcanal give a realism not often reached in these type of histories.
David T.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12465166826152433002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491492892937231972.post-71811814695762683372023-01-10T14:58:00.003-08:002023-01-10T14:58:23.051-08:00The Closing of the American Mind
I've read this many times - it's one of my favorites - and somehow it didn't make it on to this reading log.
David T.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12465166826152433002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491492892937231972.post-53538450976570268512023-01-10T14:55:00.005-08:002023-01-10T14:55:57.881-08:00The Dumbest Generation Grows Up by Mark Bauerlein
A follow-on to his earlier The Dumbest Generation. In this one, O'Connor searches in the wilderness near the Canadian border (Lake Superior) for a girl named Shiloh who, it turns out, is being hunted by some bad men. It's a bit formulaic but well done nonetheless. This is a good series.
David T.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12465166826152433002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491492892937231972.post-3070882688980743502022-09-27T16:01:00.004-07:002022-09-27T16:01:48.316-07:00Thomist Realism and the Critique of Knowledge by Etienne Gilson
Gilson's penetrating analysis of the difference between realist and critical philosophies.
David T.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12465166826152433002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491492892937231972.post-693482766374838032022-09-20T16:49:00.004-07:002022-09-20T16:49:38.942-07:00The Enemy at the Gate by Andrew Wheatcroft
Excellent history of the great Siege of Vienna in 1683, when the Habsburgs, supported by other European forces, defeated the last great attempt by the Turks to overrun Europe.
David T.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12465166826152433002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491492892937231972.post-79834975080499235572022-08-28T16:12:00.005-07:002022-08-28T16:12:57.357-07:00Mind, Language and Society by John Searle
Written in 1998, Searle develops an analysis of social structure in terms of his philosophy of mind and language.
